The Ashmolean’s current exhibition, Labyrinth: Knossos, Myth and Reality tells the story of the search for the mythical Labyrinth, resulting in the discovery of the archaeological site of Knossos. Over 100 loan objects from Greece, combined with the Ashmolean’s unique collection of artefacts and archives from the excavation of the site by Sir Arthur Evans, help to tell the story. But the exhibition also has a strong digital component, which this event will explore.
The curator of the exhibition, Dr Andrew Shapland will introduce the event and be joined by three speakers who will each present their unique contributions:
Romain Fascialé from Ubisoft will discuss the creation of a model of Knossos used in the game Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey. Ubisoft created a film of the model specially for the exhibition to demonstrate the research behind the game and this film will be shown as part of the event.
Dr John Pouncett from the Oxford University School of Archaeology will discuss the creation of a digital 3D model of the site of Knossos based on the latest plan of the site by the Greek Archaeological Service. He will present the model and outline future avenues for research.
Dr Clare Llewellyn from the University of Edinburgh will discuss a social media experiment in which exhibition visitors wrote a label for their favourite object and posted it on social media. These labels were then gathered by the project and turned into Linked Open Data about the exhibition using computational techniques. Clare will present the results of the experiment. Can we reconstruct an exhibition using Twitter and Instagram?
A panel discussion will follow about the role of digital technology in exhibitions: does technology enhance the exhibition experience or detract from an encounter with physical objects? The event will finish with a drinks reception and networking in the Hub's ground floor space.
This event is part of the Cheng Kar Shun Digital Hub events programme at Jesus College, and hosted in collaboration with the Ashmolean Museum.
